Their music is written for people who get punched out in mosh pits (cuz they dont belong there) and write about how so and sos an asshole on their blog that nobody reads and finds Sienfeld funny.Īs for lo-fi asthetic, Guided by Voices does it better (and consequently kicks more ass). Some ok songs (Lorettas Scars) but barely putters to the finish line. Now to the songs: I think these songs were written lyrics first, as opposed to structuring out the whole thing musically, because I cannot conceive how these songs could be structured in the latter way, theyre so weird and oblong and drift into different things that I could never have come up with.Īnd if they were structured that way from the start, then Stephen Malkmus is a genius, and I feel very shriveled and insecure.
None of these had to be b-sides or hidden gems, they all range from pretty good to masterful. Why did they leave out such great songs on the original version of this album You let Two States on there, but you thought Mercy Snack and Baptist Blacktick were unsuitable What kind of poorly circuited brain reaches that conclusion Theres some really good songs on here that were hidden from the world for ten years. Whether hes screaming at the top of his lungs, Conduit for Sale, or crooning on a heartaching ballad, Here, SM sounds so great that you stop caring that hes really not that great of a singer.Įssential listening for anyone intrigued by alternative rock and roll. Id like to think Ive moved past that point in my life, and perhaps hearing this album (especially Here) brings back those feelings.Īnyway, all this is to say, Ill pass on this, thank you.Įverything about this album rocks Every song represents some influence of past bands, yet Pavement still sound completely unique every time. That wouldnt have been a problem except that for someone with insecurity issues, being in a band like that was both extremely fun and emotionally taxing at the same time. The feeling that all we knew was we loved music, and wanted to make music, but didnt have any clue what we were doing. You see, it bothers me because I actually felt the insecurity and self-depreciation that I hear hidden in this album.
We were even compared to Pavement in a local music magazines review of one of our albums.Īnd I dont say that to be a compliment to us, either.
To be honest, the album reminds me a lot of my band when we were playing and making records. For many, thats part of the charm I suppose I dont know, dont ask me.
